Arts, Culture & Recreation in Springfield, MA.
Abstract
MCC, START, and the Davis Foundation are committed to understanding how Springfield’s diverse racial and ethnic groups perceive arts and recreation, whether these groups attend or participate in local cultural events, and how interested they are in cultural activities that are (or could be) offered in the area. MCC, START, and the Davis Foundation are particularly interested in identifying barriers racial and ethnic groups may face in regard to attending or participating in local events and activities. This report presents the results of a study conducted by Market Street Research, Inc., MCC, START, and the Davis Foundation that was designed to:
- Assess the community’s interest, attendance, and participation in events and activities;
- Assess the community’s interest in events and activities for children, and current participation of children in events and activities;
- Assess the community’s interest in physical activities for children, and current participation of children in physical activities;
- Identify barriers to attendance of and participation in events and activities;
- Identify the community’s preferences regarding types of events and activities; and
- Identify how the community would prefer to find out about events and activities being offered in the area.
In early 2004, Market Street Research, MCC, START, and the Davis Foundation collaborated to conduct interviews with 235 Springfield residents who represent the region’s broad racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity.
